Keep Your Priorities Straight
When’s the last time you spent quality time with God? When’s the last time you sat at His feet and listened to what He had to say? Did you know He looks forward to spending time with you every day? You are the object of His love and when you love someone you desire to spend time with them. You may be a college student, work a full-time job or even be a stay at home mom but you should set time aside to spend with God. Don’t let the busyness of everyday life distract you from what’s most important.
One day as Jesus and the disciples were on their way to Jerusalem they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister Mary was seated at the Lord’s feet and was continually listening to His teaching, but Martha was very busy and distracted with all of her serving responsibilities. She didn’t think it was fair that she did all the work while her sister just sat there. (Luke 10:41-42- The Lord answered her, “Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by all these many distractions? Are they really that important? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won’t take this privilege from her.”)
Martha is a prime example of a person who’s too distracted to spend time with God. There’s nothing wrong with being busy but if it causes you to put God on the backburner you need to check your priorities. “When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.” Martha’s priorities weren’t in order, if they were she would’ve been sitting with Mary feasting on God’s Word. Mary understood the significance of being in God’s presence and listening to His Word. (Matthew 4:4- But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’) God’s Word is your daily bread, if you’re not feeding on His Word you won’t have the nourishment that your spirit man needs.
One of the most important things to do while driving is to stay focused on the road. Each time you take your focus off the road, even if just for a split second, you’re putting your life and the lives of others in danger. Just like it’s important to stay focused on the road while driving, it’s important for you to stay focused on Jesus. Distractions prevent you from giving your full attention to Him. A distracted Christian can easily become a lukewarm or stagnant Christian and you may not only affect yourself but the people around you who are watching you live a godly life.
Being able to sit at the feet of Jesus is a privilege that you shouldn’t take for granted. Don’t be too busy distracted by the things around you that you lose sight of what’s important. When you take your eyes off Jesus it’s easy to get distracted. Be like Mary and understand the significance of putting God first, ushering into His presence and feeding on His Word.
